Stickman Cartel debut single ‘Accolade’

Stickman Cartel

North London based indie-dance 5 piece Stickman Cartel  released their debut single ‘Accolade’ on 2nd September 2013, accompanied by a video for the track. ‘Accolade’ was produced by Grammy winning Matt Lawrence (Magnetic Man, Emeli Sande, Mumford and Sons) and mastered by Stuart Hawkes at Metropolis (Chase and Status, Example and Pendulum).

Their outstanding live sets have already created a credible aura of hype around the band, not only in London but also through their impressive festival performances at the likes of Glastonbury and Secret Garden Party.  Their unique sound is a combination of calypso beats, house/dub synths and angular guitars, making for an experience that excites music fans who like to move their feet whilst getting lost in a catchy melody that’s bursting with dynamism.

Recorded at The Pool in Bermondsey, ‘Accolade’ begins with pulsating synths and a brooding energy, catchy guitar riffs are entwined, building to a chorus that bursts with intoxicating vibrancy at its climax. Focusing on themes of recognition and acknowledgment, vocalist Ben Friedman is able to sing with tenderness when necessary, but also brings urgency and passion to the poetic lyrics of ‘Accolade.’

The video was directed by Robert S. Smith for production team, A Beard And A No Show, and draws upon the themes of the song whilst capturing the band’s live show. Shot entirely from the perspective of an enigmatic character seeking refuge at a secret Stickman Cartel gig, we follow the character as they attempt to fit in with the crowd but it becomes apparent their drunken antics have left the rest of the audience indifferent. The visual effects in the video were provided by Anthony Brownmoore of Blue Spill.

Ben of Stickman Cartel said: “We chose Accolade as our debut single as it’s the perfect introduction to our style of music, a song that blends the various genres of music that have influenced our writing. It has always been one of the highlights of our live sets and with the help of Matt Lawrence we were able to retain the song’s energy on record.”

The debut single from Stickman Cartel combines elements of dance-punk, electro-rock and melodic indie, a fusion of sounds that makes for a refreshing, fun and pulsating experience.
