Maini Sorri

Hi, how are you?
Hi, thank you for asking, I am fine.

Which instruments do you play?
I play piano and guitar.

What made you decide to be a solo artist and not want to be in a band?
I am mainly a solo artist but I have also a band with an Italian artist John Baumann. Our band is Sorriso, it means “smile” in Italian.

Do you work with the same musicians when recording as you do when performing live?
Mostly not.

How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t yet heard you?
The most of my songs are pop ballades even if my new release Let Me Do Your Time is a dance/techno track. I think my songs combine lyrics that have a message with good melodies.

What have you been up to recently?
I have been promoting my new video Let Me Do Your Time. I just wrote a new song. And my band Sorriso recently recorded a new track.

What can your fans look forward to in the next 12 months?
The next 12 months will be very exciting. Let Me Do Your Time was released 28th February. I have several new singles ready waiting to be released. I have lots of new songs and the studio is booked for new recordings.

Did you always want to be in a musician/singer when younger?
I guess I always knew that I would work with music in some way or another. My education is a Bachelor of Arts and for some years ago I taught children and teenagers to play piano and sing.

What music did you listen to while growing up?
I loved to listen to pop music. I loved Judith Durham from Australia and her band The Seekers. I listened to Beatles and Abba.

How long have you played your instruments?
I have played piano and guitar since I was a child, I began to take piano lessons when I was 8.

What was your first music making experience?
I composed my first piano piece when I was 8, it just came to me, just like my songs that I write now come to me:)

What is your current equipment?
My equipment at home is my piano and a microphone and an old audio cd recorder so I can make home recordings of all new songs.

Are you self-taught or did you have lessons?
I had both piano and song lessons during many years and I have studied at Music Academy for 4 years piano, song, music theory and music history. I still meet a song coach regularly.

If you had an unlimited equipment budget what would be on your shopping list?
A home studio would be nice :)

Do you use the same equipment live as you do when in a studio?
No, when I come to a studio I use the equipment there.

Do you have a set routine when writing and recording or does it depend on each track and the inspiration?
I only write music when I get a strong feeling that just must come out, that “routine” is always the same. I always rehearse a lot before recording. Recording routine is the same every time, I first record the lead several times and then all chorus voices.

Would you sign with a major record company?
Yes, I would love to:)

How much involvement do you have with the arranging and production of the songs when recording?
When it comes to arranging the music I work with guys that pretty much know what I want because I have worked with them for many years. When it comes to mixing I am very much involved because it is very important for me to get exactly the sound that I want to have.

Is the production side of things something you’d like to get involved more in the future, maybe working with other artists?
I have never thought of it before but maybe.

Do you find the process of recording enjoyable and does it get easier the more you do?
I like to be in studio, to be focused and to get good results. Yes, I think it is easier now.

Do you have any favourite tracks on your album?
I like my new single Let Me Do Your Time. On my Someday album my favourites are Someday and I Am Leaving.

Do you find song writing easy or difficult?
It is very easy because songs just come to me. Writing down is the part that takes time:) And recording them of course:)

Do you write songs/tracks only about personal experiences?
I write lyrics about feelings I have felt. I also write music to other’s lyrics. Many people send their lyrics to me and want me to compose them. When the strong feeling comes I write the lyrics by myself of choose someone else’ poem that suits my mood in that moment.

Is there anyone who you would like to collaborate with on writing songs or performing?
I have never written music with someone else, I don’t think it works because the music comes to me in the moment I get the strong feeling. But I am very happy about all poems people have sent to me, I love collaboration with lyrics writers. It would be nice to perform with other artists but I have no peculiar on my mind.

Who are your favourite songwriters?
I like song writers that appreciate classic song writing values. I think Beatles and Abba wrote good songs.

Which countries have you gigged in?
I have gigged in Finland and Sweden.

Which countries would be at the top of your list to tour?
All invitations are welcome:) I’ll see then if they suite my schedule.

How do you promote your music and get your music out to new fans?
I promote my music on my website, facebook, Myspace, Last.fm, spotify  and YouTube and by sending my music to radio and tv and sending updates about my career to media. I love to be in touch with my fans all around the world.

How do you relax?
I relax practicing, skiing in winter and bike rides, Nordic walking and inlines in summer. I relax by reading books, too but don’t have much time for it.

Do you think such sites and the internet are good tools for independent and unsigned artists?
I am absolutely sure that internet and different sites are good tools. It is good way to make the music and me as an artist visible and it is a great joy to communicate with listeners in different parts of the world.

With all the various websites out there for independent and unsigned artists, is there still something that is missing from them that you think would benefit the lesser-known artists?
I think the most important thing is that the artist is visible, not just the music. Every artist should spend time communicating with fans.

What’s your best/worst experience at a gig?
The best experience is when people tell me afterwards that I touched their heart. The worst experience would be if the audience left the gig without saying anything:)

Do you get nervous before a gig- how do you calm down?
I’m always nervous before a gig. I calm down before the gig by being quiet and focusing.

Has your music been used on any film soundtracks?
Not yet :)

Is it something you’d like to get involved in if the opportunity came along?
Yes, it would be great!

Is there anything you’d like to add?
Thank you for the interview. Greetings and hugs to all my fans!
