Hi, How are you?
Tom Waits, Irish coffee and a cig. Very well, thank you.
What or who inspired you to paint/draw in the first place?
Drew a lot in class and teachers told me no one could make a living out of drawing. The fear of growing up and becoming like my teacher inspired me. And of course; prove them wrong.
What do you think is the most important influence in your art?
Music is a big influence. Love to sit in the dark, listen to music and draw.
When did you first get interested in animation?
My mom used to put on a lot of Tom & Jerry and Disney cartoons when I was a kid, so I grew up on the good stuff. Thanks mom. When I finished high school I wanted to study in another country. Figured I could combine drawing and film interest through animation. So I spent 3 years in Australia doing a Bachelor of Animation.
Where do you do your work?
I work at home atm.
Do you work from life, from photographs or from imagination?
Most of what I draw is from my imagination. Some may be inspired by real people, but I don’t like copying real life. I like to believe that’s what cameras are for.
What are you currently working on?
Doing comics for a monthly Norwegian comic magazine called M. Also working on an animation project.
Which is more important to you, the subject or story in your work, or the way it is presented?
A good story can be presented badly etc. Both are important.
What are your favourite materials to work with?
Do you concentrate mostly on content or technique in your work?
I like to take the easy way out, but also like quality. It all depends on that I’m doing.
Do you work certain hours each day or only when you are inspired?
I work at home, therefore also live at work. Sometimes I work heaps, other times I watch movies. I like the independence and the fact that I can legally work naked.
What do you think the role of the artist is in society and do you think that role is changing with the advances of technology?
The role is to inspire. I don’t own a TV. Neither did daVinci.
What is your favourite period in art history?
Have you held any exhibitions?
Do you use any online services like ‘imagekind.com’, ‘redbubble’ or ‘cafepress’?
Got some stuff on artybuzz.com, thanks for reminding me.
What advice would you give to anyone who wanted to take up painting or drawing?
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Chocolate Jesus is a good song.
